Alternative Oscars 2019: The Nominees & Winners For Every Category

9. Best Film Editing

First Man Ryan Gosling
Universal

WINNER: First Man

In a just world, Tom Cross would've received his third Oscar nomination and second win for his splendid editing on First Man, which would've been his third straight nod working with director Damien Chazelle.

Some may argue that the film is too slow-paced, but Cross shows an expert knowledge of when to hold on actors in quiet, intimate scenes, and when to ramp up the intensity during pulse-pounding set-pieces.

We've thrown out every single nominated movie in this category - BlacKkKlansman, Bohemian Rhapsody, The Favourite, Green Book and Vice - because none of them did anything particularly remarkable for the medium.

Conversely, in addition to First Man, Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse made impressive logic out of its frequent assault on the senses, Mission: Impossible - Fallout synergised beautiful action sequences, Avengers: Infinity War somehow juggled its competing plot and characters stunningly well, and Hereditary did a note-perfect job of sustain a dread-filled tone throughout.

RUNNERS-UP:

2. Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse

3. Mission: Impossible - Fallout

4. Avengers: Infinity War

5. Hereditary
