Alternative Oscars 2019: The Nominees & Winners For Every Category
18. Best Supporting Actress
WINNER: Rachel Weisz (The Favourite)*
This is a fierce category for sure, but Rachel Weisz's expectation-defying performance in The Favourite was at once deliciously savage and, like most of the film's turns, layered with a subtle tenor of tragedy. In a film with three impeccable performances, hers just might be the finest.
Elsewhere we included the Academy's nominations for Emma Stone (The Favourite) and Marina de Tavira (Roma), but ditched Regina King (If Beale Street Could Talk) for being the most wildly over-praised performance this awards season, and Amy Adams (Vice) because it was merely decent work in a merely decent movie.
Tilda Swinton gave one of the year's most stunning performances playing three distinct roles in Suspiria, and no matter your opinion on the entire movie, her commitment to the parts was incredible.
Also, Ann Dowd gave a wonderfully subtle performance in indie horror Hereditary, one which informs and truly does support Toni Collette's mind-blowing focal turn.
RUNNERS-UP:
2. Tilda Swinton (Suspiria)
3. Emma Stone (The Favourite)*
4. Marina de Tavira (Roma)*
5. Ann Dowd (Hereditary)
