Alternative Oscars 2019: The Nominees & Winners For Every Category

19. Best Visual Effects

Avengers Infinity War Thanos
Marvel Studios

WINNER: Avengers: Infinity War*

It's looking likely that the Marvel Cinematic Universe will scoop its first ever Academy Award for Avengers: Infinity War's jaw-dropping visual effects work, and it'll be thoroughly deserved.

Given how often superhero movies turn their CGI characters into gelatinous, lifeless blobs - looking at you, Justice League - what Infinity War achieved with Thanos (Josh Brolin) was nothing short of miraculous.

Because the VFX work on nominated movies Christopher Robin, Ready Player One and Solo: A Star Wars Story was all solid yet ultimately unremarkable, we ditched them for some more memorable and artful choices.

It's rare for animated films to land in this category due to the belief that the entire movie is a visual effect, but The Nightmare Before Christmas and Kubo and the Two Strings have been nominated prior (both of them stop-motion, not-so-coincidentally).

Given the ground-breaking visuals in Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, though it absolutely deserves to be nominated, while Annihilation's third act served up some of 2018's most mind-boggling effects work, and Bumblebee delivered the most tactile and "realistic" movie Transformers to date.

RUNNERS-UP:

2. First Man*

3. Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse

4. Annihilation

5. Bumblebee
