2. Best Sound Mixing

Musicals always have a leg-up here and La La Land is no exception, perfectly incorporating its music and dialogue into a gorgeously symphonic mix.

RUNNERS-UP:

2. Hacksaw Ridge

3. Deepwater Horizon

4. The Jungle Book

5. 13 Hours: The Secret Soldiers of Benghazi

Best Sound Editing

Hacksaw Ridge Andrew Garrfield
Summit Entertainment

WINNER: Hacksaw Ridge

In terms of sound creation, the action genre is always a big hit here, and Mel Gibson's brutally violent war film certainly didn't shy away from the ear-ringing terror of battle.

Yes, it's hard not to show favoritism towards the movie's sound editor, Kevin O'Connell, who has been nominated 21 times without a win, making him "Oscar's biggest loser". That streak needs to end (but it won't at the actual Oscars, sadly).

RUNNERS-UP:

2. Deepwater Horizon

3. The Jungle Book

4. Captain America: Civil War

5. La La Land
