We learned in late 2012 that fantastic young actress Shailene Woodley would be cast in The Amazing Spider-Man 2 as Mary-Jane Watson. Response to the casting appeared to be mostly positive, and by last March she had finished filming her scenes. However, some candid pictures of Woodley arriving on set without her make-up on leaked online, causing many to suggest that Woodley was simply too "plain" and "not pretty enough" for the part, claims which, as you can observe above, are simply ridiculous. In June of last year, Marc Webb announced that Woodley had been cut from the movie, claiming "a creative decision to streamline the story and focus on Peter and Gwen and their relationship", while many speculated that the online backlash had sparked the decision. Whatever the truth, it's a shame that Webb couldn't make room for Woodley's portrayal of the character given how much other additional material he indulged in. Due to her commitment on the Divergent series, it also appears that Woodley won't be reprising the role in The Amazing Spider-Man 3, which is a major loss for the production.
