Marvel apparently have movies planned out to 2028. Fox is going to expand, with both The X-Men and The Fantastic Four coming head to head in the same universe. Superman versus Batman (or quasi Justice League) is coming in 2016. Even TV is getting in on the act with a Flash spin off from Arrow and the four Marvel Netflix series in development, starting with a fresh take on Daredevil. No longer are superheroes living in isolation. Spider-Man is getting in on the act too; the limitations of the Spideyverse aren't holding Sony back and we already have Venom and Sinister Six spin-offs in development. The former we assume will come to the fore in the third Amazing Spider-Man film, and then maybe as the anti-hero Agent Venom of the comics, while the latter will be the first super-villain-centric film released. It's ambitious. It could fail spectacularly. But it could also be the jewel in the crown for Sony in the same way that The Avengers was for Marvel. While the risks are greater, it shows that the current incarnation of Spider-Man is far bolder and innovative than Raimi's trilogy. That isn't a fault of those films. They helped to redefine modern superhero tales and Spider-Man 2 was the blueprint for modern superhero sequels. But in today's superhero cinematic universe Webb's Spider-Man is making that epic leap and that is an exciting thing.
A writer for Whatculture since May 2013, I also write for TheRichest.com and am the TV editor and writer for Thedigitalfix.com . I wrote two plays for the Greater Manchester Horror Fringe in 2013, the first an adaption of Simon Clark's 'Swallowing A Dirty Seed' and my own original sci-fi horror play 'Centurion', which had an 8/10* review from Starburst magazine! (http://www.starburstmagazine.com/reviews/eventsupcoming-genre-events/6960-event-review-centurion) I also wrote an episode for online comedy series Supermarket Matters in 2012. I aim to achieve my goal for writing for television (and get my novels published) but in the meantime I'll continue to write about those TV shows I love!
