The Amazing Spider-Man 2: 10 Ways The Reboot Is Superior

3. Amazing Chemistry In The Romantic Leads

Try as they might, Maguire's Peter and Dunst's Mary Jane had nothing on the romantic duo that was Garfield's Peter and Stone's Gwen. The tension, the passion, the goofy humour; it's there on screen in spades and isn't surprising that they became a couple off screen as well as on. In Spider-Man, Mary Jane was Peter Parker's one true love because we were told (literally in the opening) but it never felt really believable. Sure we felt her frustration over his secrets in the sequel and she certainly had some sass and passion in the first film but we didn't really care, not like we were supposed to. Had she died, would it have had the impact it deserved? Now Peter and Gwen; we believe every lingering look, every kiss, every moment of them together. Already in the trailers we can see that spark hasn't gone anywhere. There's a reason they couldn't stay apart at the end of The Amazing Spider-Man, despite Peter's promise to her father and if the Green Goblin seals her fate (a fate that readers and non-readers alike will be painfully aware of), it is going to be unbearable to watch. As for Mary Jane, ultimate love interest or not, she's going to have some massive shoes to feel when she eventually turns up in this Peter Parker's life.
