Ambulance Review: 6 Ups & 4 Downs

3. The Totally Chaotic Editing

Though Bay serves up quite the visual feast throughout his new film, it has to be said that his tendency for overly busy, hurried editing undermines much of his visually dynamic work behind the camera.

While not nearly as frustratingly chaotic as 6 Underground, Ambulance rarely lingers on a single shot for more than a second, which is a shame given some of the gorgeously operatic, sweeping imagery in the film.

It is a textbook example of an over-edited film, Bay seemingly having such a wealth of coverage options available to him and apparently not wishing to waste any of it.

Given that the film was cut by two-time Oscar-winning editor Pietro Scalia (JFK, Black Hawk Down), this was clearly a result of Bay's bizarre preference for a relentless bombardment of new images, even if it undercuts the audience's spatial understanding of what's going on.
