Ambulance Review: 6 Ups & 4 Downs

2. The Thinly Written Characters

Even with its substantial length, Ambulance doesn't really afford much time for its three central characters, who despite being compellingly performed feel relatively stock for the most part.

Adopted brother bank robber protagonists Danny and Will Sharp (Jake Gyllenhaal and Yahya Abdul-Mateen II) are drawn in totally broad strokes and we don't really get much of an inkling of them outside of their basic motivations for robbing the bank.

Similarly their captive EMT Cam Thompson (Eiza González) is mostly defined by her job and little else, and though certainly rendered likeable through González's performance isn't one of the more memorable Michael Bay characters.

"Serviceable" is probably the best word to describe the three central characters - they're more-or-less props on which to hang the high-wire action and just about pass muster in that regard.
