Ambulance Review: 6 Ups & 4 Downs

3. Yahya Abdul-Mateen II & Eiza González Provide Strong Support

Though Ambulance absolutely belongs to Jake Gyllenhaal, the film also benefits massively from the strong work of co-stars Yahya Abdul-Mateen II and Eiza González.

Abdul-Mateen's Will is basically the straight man to his brother Danny - an altogether more reasonable and sympathetic human being who did a bad thing out of sheer desperation, robbing a bank so that his wife could get the expensive vital surgery she needs.

Abdul-Mateen brings a real humanity to Will even though we never lose sight of the sheer mayhem his decision leaves in its wake, while Eiza González gives an impressively nuanced performance as EMT Cam even though the role is fundamentally underwritten.

As the cool-headed, determined first responder desperately fighting to keep herself and a wounded police officer alive throughout the duration of the chase, Cam is easily the most likeable character here and it's all down to González's fine work.
