American Made Review: 7 Ups & 3 Downs

1. It's Genuinely Suspenseful

American Made Tom Cruise
Universal

Whether or not you know the outcome of Seal's story before watching the movie, the third act in particular is genuinely suspenseful, as the walls begin closing in and it becomes increasingly less likely that he will be able to leverage a way out.

Cruise sells the anxiety of continually looking over his shoulder perfectly, and Liman milks this for maximum tension all the way to the end credits.

Though there are many, many funny scenes in this film, Liman knows when to ramp up the genuine fear and intensity, and it works perfectly, ensuring the film's tone remains on-point throughout, as is especially important in the third reel.
