An American Pickle Review: 6 Ups & 4 Downs

3. The Underused Supporting Cast

An American Pickle Jorma Taccone

Another lacking element compared to most Seth Rogen comedies is the piecemeal supporting cast. The movie is focused quite singularly on the central Rogen two-hander, while the smaller roles ultimately feel rather thin and underwhelming.

The brilliant Sarah Snook plays Herschel's wife Sarah in the establishing scenes but is given virtually nothing to do, while brief bit-parts from comedians such as Jorma Taccone, Eliot Glazer, and Molly Evensen hold plenty of promise, yet are just too miniscule and malnourished to satisfy.

If you're expecting the movie to be jam-packed with ridiculous cameos from Rogen's Hollywood pals, prepare to be bitterly disappointed that it's really not much of an ensemble film at all.
