4. It's Low On Big Laughs

An American Pickle Seth Rogen
Warner Bros.

Easily the most disappointing thing about this movie is the shocking lack of major, gut-busting laughs. Though Rogen's films have a tendency to meld hysterical one-liners with affecting storytelling, here the humour feels a little more measured.

Even accepting the general lack of profanity - which is at once both odd and refreshing - it feels like Simon Rich's script doesn't do nearly enough to mine the full comedic potential from its intriguingly bizarre premise.

Those used to howling with laughter at the crude gags and spot-on pop-culture references in Rogen's prior films will likely find themselves only smirking and politely chuckling for the most part here, unfortunately.
