Anne Hathaway: 5 Awesome Performances And 5 That Sucked

2. Kym - Rachel Getting Married (2008)

The title might sound like a grammatical spoonerism, but there's a very good chance Rachel Getting Married is the finest Anne Hathaway film on this list (she only pipped herself in performance terms with what amounts to an expanded cameo after all). In it, she plays the kind of transformative character that usually comes naturally to any actors who started out in Disney-fied fare and sought authenticity and human realism later in their career. For some - like Zac Efron - it's a fool's gambit, but for Hathaway, playing junkies and vulnerable people and people who are generally quite broken has worked out pretty well. Or at least that perception is possible thanks to this performance, which is blistering and painful like a pricked nerve, and which inevitably had critics scrabbling for synonyms for the word "real". Honest it definitely is, and there's no manipulation (unlike in Love And Other Drugs), making for a truly spell-binding performance.
