Anne Hathaway: 5 Awesome Performances And 5 That Sucked

3. Amelia Brand - Interstellar (2014)

Christopher Nolan has a tendency to use many of the same actors in multiple films, with the likes of Michael Caine, Christian Bale, and Joseph Gordan-Levitt among those the director favours. Add Hathaway to that list too, as her performance in The Dark Knight Rises obviously left enough of an impression to convince him to cast her in his follow-up, the philosophical space epic Interstellar. It's another film where Hathaway isn't the major star of the show (that billing goes partly to Matthew McConaughey and partly to the space porn) but one where she manages to subtly grab your attention. She plays scientist Dr Amelia Brand, one of the crew that departs Earth in search of a better future. While Matthew McConaughey's Cooper philosophises and gets the biggest emotional beats, Hathaway remains the more stoic scientist. You could criticise it as being too unemotional, but when you've got Cooper emoting all over the screen, it's a sensible choice to slightly underplay Brand, who exudes a quieter, less blatant sort of emotion. There may be fault in the way the character was written, but not in Hathaway's performance, and in 10-20 years hopefully everyone will be looking back on Interstellar as a masterpiece.
