Anne Hathaway: 5 Awesome Performances And 5 That Sucked

3. The White Queen - Alice In Wonderland (2010)

Remember the excitement when a Tim Burton version of Alice In Wonderland was announced, with Johnny Depp as the Mad Hatter? It was tangible - which is perhaps how the film managed to bring in an astronomical billion dollar box office haul. But this was back when I, along with many others, still had faith in both Burton and Depp to produce something great and visually stunning. Sadly, the reality of the film was a let-down on almost every front. A lot of time and money clearly went into the visuals, and none on really capturing the wonderful spirit of the source material, with Lewis Carrol's band of increasingly weird characters coming off as a poor tribute act. Sadly, Burton never seemed to realise, probably believing that having a smattering of caricatures and grotesques would distract just enough from the far more interesting background. He was wrong. Hathaway plays the White Queen, which compared to the likes of Depp's Hatter and Helena Bonham Carter's Red Queen is a much more understated performance, but then that just contributes to her role being largely forgettable. She's entirely swallowed up, which should be classed as a disappointing failure for anyone whose job is basically to get people to notice them.
