8. Thank You For Smoking

Jason Reitman has had a fairly remarkable career since the mid-2000s, thanks to such fan favourite movies as Juno, Up in the Air and Young Adult. He is currently slated to direct to the upcoming Ghostbusters: Afterlife, which is guaranteed to get a lot of publicity. But it is his 2005 directorial debut, Thank You For Smoking, which deserves some more recognition.

Starring Aaron Eckhart as Nick Taylor, a lobbyist for a large cigarette business, the film follows as Taylor attempts to be a good father and role model to his young son, Joey. He also attempts to prove that smoking does not cause lung disease, and eventually finds himself questioning his work and his life.

Thank You For Smoking is an odd, funny and deeply moving piece social-commentary covered up by a well-acted and intelligent black comedy.

It also stars J.K Simmons, Maria Bello, Sam Elliot, Katie Holmes and Robert Duvall, and if a cast like that - paired with a plot revolving around smoking and subtly mocking big businesses - isn't enough to get you on bound, then nothing will.

Aidan Whatman hasn't written a bio just yet, but if they had... it would appear here.
