Another 20 Underrated Movies You Have To See

9. The Recruit

The Island Ewan McGregor Scarlett Johansson
Buena Vista Pictures

Released in early 2003 to a so-so box office return and an okay critical reception, The Recruit is a spy thriller starring Colin Farrell and Al Pacino and features enough twists, shocks and surprises to keep you guessing right until the very end.

Farrell stars as James Clayton, a CIA recruit who is hired by senior instructor Walter Burke (Pacino) to find a sleeper agent somewhere within the agency. During his time with Burke, Clayton is tortured, subject to intense questioning, and even falls in love. But he also must come to terms with the CIA's hidden corruption and the fact that someone he would have never expected is a traitor.

It's a tight and well-orchestrated thriller with a series of constantly engaging twists that make the final outcome tough to see coming. Also, Pacino is (as ever) on top form and Farrell holds up brilliantly next to the Oscar winner every scene they're together, which is when the film works best. The action is fun, the tension constant, and the tone consistently entertaining; a film which never misses a moment to shine.
