Another 20 Underrated Movies You Have To See
18. The Book Of Eli
Anything with Denzel Washington is worth a watch. He's a nine-time Oscar nominee (and two-time winner) whose films include a slew of classics, such as Training Day, Glory and Malcolm X. He shines best in dramas, without question, but his more recent foray into action flicks is one of Hollywood's more successful Oscar-winner-turns-to-action-films stories. Whilst The Equalizer films and Man on Fire could have easily made this list, the honour goes to the Hughes Brothers' 2010 neo-western, The Book of Eli.
Eli (Washington) is a nomadic wanderer in a post-apocalyptic landscape. In his possession he carries a book which he claims can save mankind. Through his travels, Eli comes face-to-face with a small make-shift town led by a controlling and vile man called Carnegie (Gary Oldman), who is attempting to rule his town through fear. He is also searching for a book, and with Eli under his watchful eye he deduces he may have found it.
The film is truly spectacular. The action sequences are stylish and slick, the landscape of the barren world stunning, and the performances of Washington, Oldman and Mila Kunis are all terrific. And despite the dreary, world-ending tones, the film's climax is both a great twist offered up with a slice of hope few post-apocalyptic movies are able to pull off.
