The concept for this 2009 sci-fi action movie is about as unique as a film can get. Set in the not-too-distant future, prison convicts are forced to participate in a first person shooter game, where they are controlled by gamers in the outside world like real-life avatars.

Within the game is John "Kable" Tillman (Gerard Butler), who is being controlled by Simon (Logan Lerman). Kable is a superstar, having survived nearly thirty games, more than any previous convict. When the creators of the mind-control game begin to feel threatened by Kable's unlikely win streak, they attempt to cheat and have him killed, but Kable is approached by a group of rebels who offer him a chance to escape.

What follows is a no-holds-barred action full to the brim with shocking violence and a social commentary about violence in video games and the power of technology has on society. Butler makes for a great action star, and Michael C. Hall's sinister antagonist Ken Castle is a thrill to watch.

The film is gratuitous and often bleak, but is also a constantly entertaining and full-throttle thriller with lots of guns and excitement.
