Another 20 Underrated Movies You Have To See

12. The Island

The Island is without question Michael Bay's most underrated picture. Sure, it's still got some crazy action sequences and nonsensical explosions, but The Island also has more control, heart and effective plot-points than all of Bay's other movies combined. It's also a seriously cool and clever piece of sci-fi for anyone who likes their films to have a slew of twists and shock revelations.

In the film, which was released in 2005, Lincoln (Ewan McGregor) and Jordan (Scarlett Johansson) are just two of many people who live on the titular island. The rest of the world, according to the leaders of the compound, is dead and cannot support human life. After a series of strange dreams and revelations, Lincoln discovers that the inhabitants of the island are all clones of wealthy people who may need vital transplants later in life.

Shocked and confused, Lincoln escapes the island with Jordan and a little help from a technician called McCord (Steve Buscemi), and works to unleash the truth of the island to the rest of the world.

The cast is rounded out by Sean Bean, Michael Clarke Duncan and Djimou Hounsou, and features a plethora of brilliantly realised twists, characters and confrontations (including some hilarious and tense McGregor vs McGregor scenes). The effects are great, the story is fast and intelligent, and the whole thing is a great watch from start to finish.
