Another 20 Underrated Movies You Have To See

11. Big Fan

Big Fan is probably the least seen film on this list, and for a lot of reasons it's clear why. It had a limited release, and made just over $200,000 at the box office. Despite the limited commercial success of the picture, however, it's a shame this comedy-drama hasn't been seen by more people.

Written and directed by Robert Siegel, the film follows Paul (a career-best Patton Oswalt), a New York Giants superfan. After approaching his sporting idol, Paul finds himself beaten up, waking up some time later in hospital. What follows is a court case he never wanted and serious mental health issues, all of which forces Paul to confront the attack and his shaken psyche.

It has some funny moments, all shown with a clear sense of emotion and heart, but the second half of the film is almost pure-drama aided by a staggering performance from Oswalt. It's hard to watch in places, and tackles the themes of "Never meet your heroes", mental health and being a sports fan with ease.

If you see any sports drama this year, make it this one.
