Apostle Review: 7 Ups & 3 Downs

1. The Female Characters Aren't Terribly Interesting

It would be silly to criticise this film for its depiction of women as second class citizens, because that's merely the cruel agenda of the cult and it's not at all a viewpoint that the movie approves of or apologies for.

However, just because women are subjugated throughout the movie, that doesn't mean they also have to be uninteresting and forgettable. Though there are a few prominent female characters in Apostle, not a single one of them feels like more than a broad sketch with any palpable personality.

The focal woman, Lucy Boynton's Andrea, has a ton of screen time opposite Stevens, yet we learn precious little about who she is beyond what the plot requires her to do.

Considering that the primary male characters all feel like truly fleshed-out people, it's a shame the women are so thinly written by comparison.

These gripes aside, though, Apostle is a barmy hoot, and here's everything it nails...
