2. The Script Is Dreadful

Army of the Dead had plenty of potential.

It's well-directed, well-acted and generally strong on a technical level, while some of the action sequences pack quite a punch too.

Unfortunately, all of that potential is for naught since the film was doomed by its terrible script. Aside from a few neat comedic lines most of the dialogue is lackluster, while the rest of screenplay is too bloated and full of poorly-written attempts to make the film more emotional.

A good example of the film's bad writing is this following scene: Ana de la Reguera's character tells Dave Bautista's lead that she has romantic feelings for him in one scene, but she is then unceremoniously killed by some zombies.

This not only renders the revelation regarding the potential romance completely pointless, but it feels like a cruel and cheap attempt at emotional manipulation that feels wildly out-of-place in what is, some of the time a reasonably light-hearted film.

That scene sums up the script's problems: it's emotionally manipulative, full of plot points that go nowhere and wildly inconsistent in terms of tone. And that neatly leads onto the biggest problem with the film...
