Avengers 2: 10 Things You Need To Know About New Characters

5. Mutants No More?

Quicksilver and the Scarlet Witch began their existence in the comics as members of Magneto€™s Brotherhood of Evil Mutants. They were indebted to Magneto after he saved their lives and they stayed with him for a while, despite a growing hatred for him and dissatisfaction with their lives. After Magneto was taken by the Stranger, the siblings left the Brotherhood, and then when they discovered the Avengers were recruiting, they were sponsored by Iron Man for membership.

The question of Pietro and Wanda Maximoff€™s parentage came up a few times in the comics: they were raised by the gypsy Django Maximoff, but first they believed they were the children of Robert Frank, a WW2-era speedster named the Whizzer (who wore an unfortunate yellow costume). Later they were told Maximoff was their father until it was finally revealed that their father was none other than Magneto.

Since Magneto and mutants in general are held by Fox, Marvel won€™t be able to establish Pietro and Wanda as mutants. The Winter Soldier ended with Strucker talking about the volunteers and how the twins were the only survivors. This suggests some experimentation. There€™s also the presence of the Kree in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, who were instrumental in the creation of the Inhumans, a race of beings with superhuman abilities. And with Marvel having announced an Inhumans film, could Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch be the result of Strucker getting his hands on the Terrigen mists that grant Inhumans their powers?
