Avengers: Age Of Ultron - 10 Stupid Blunders That Completely Ruin It

2. It Never Tops Its Opening Scene

Obviously if you're Joss Whedon you're abundantly aware of just how blown away everyone was by the closing city fight from the first film, and thus one of the best ways of proving you're back with a bang is to open with your strongest material - making the multi-cam tracking scene in AoU where we see each member of the team doing what they do best absolutely spectacular. Cap pings his shield off soldiers and trees alike, Thor fries guys in all directions with forked lightning and Hulk dives in almost from nowhere only to run straight through an encampment. It's glorious, and exactly what this needed to start things off in the best way. However, from then on out it's downhill, as from a scene that has a train warping from a roadside railway to a shot showing the track is about to end (how?), to the fight you've seen in the trailer where Cap fights Ultron on the top of a van having no more hits here than you've already seen, even the final fight has nothing to write home about apart from a circling slow-motion shot showing everyone dispatching drones in abundance. It's shocking come the close of the movie how little of it stays with you in a positive sense, and by starting the whole thing out on such a high note it only serves to prove how little there was to do in terms of spectacle afterwards.
