9. Quicksilver Dies; Scarlet Witch Avenges

What Happens: When Hawkeye is trying to save a child before the S.H.I.E.L.D. lifeboats leave the city, Ultron (piloting the Quinjet) turns up, firing on him. At the last minute, Quicksilver manages to cover his fellow Avenger, but not without taking a hail of bullets himself. Scarlet Witch, angry at her brother's death, finds Ultron (who is already battered after a couple of encounters with Hulk) and, while taunting him, rips out his 'heart'. What Does It Mean: Well, in simple terms, Evan Peters' Quicksilver (from X-Men) is now the only version of the character audiences have to worry about. Quicksilver was the only character who could feasibly bite it (all the others were locked into later films), although that doesn't stop the moment itself packing an emotional punch. Interestingly, while the death of her brother could have been the start of some House Of M level destruction, Scarlet Witch is rather calm and collected (after an initial freakout) - she kills Ultron, but is later seen ready to work with the New Avengers. While this could be leaving the door open for more conflict down the line, it ties into where the film's taken the character; as Hawkeye told her earlier, there's an overriding sense of duty to be an Avenger.
