Avengers: Age Of Ultron: 11 Biggest Questions It Leaves Unanswered

9. Why Is Tony Iron Man Again?

Like The Dark Knight Rises before it, Iron Man 3 did something that no comic has before achieved: a proper beginning, middle and an end to a superhero's story. It's in the nature of serialised, never-ending comic book series that characters are doomed to leave their arc incomplete. You'll never see Bruce Wayne retiring from the Batman mantle in the comics, because there's always more enemies to fight. Ditto Tony Stark in the Iron Man comics. Which is why it was refreshing to see the character hanging up his shellhead for good. And in spectacular fashion, too, with his numerous suits of armour being detonated like celebratory fireworks over the site of the film's final battle against corporate bad guy of the year. After the majority of the movie involved Tony out of the suit, battling with PTSD brought on by the Battle Of New York, it would make sense he'd retire from the superhero game at the end of the film. All of which goes out the window when, at the beginning of Age Of Ultron, he's back in said game immediately and it's never addressed why. Well, contracts is the reason why, having renewed his to appear in this film - but there's no in-universe explanation.
