Avengers: Endgame - 13 Things It Actually Took From The Comics

1. Sam Wilson Becomes Captain America

Although the vast majority of fans had placed their bets on Bucky Barnes becoming the new Captain America, come Endgame's conclusion, and it was Sam Wilson who was now set to wield the shield.

Both Bucky and Sam had taken on the identity of Captain America before, with Bucky doing so during Ed Brubaker's seminal stint on the book, but the circumstances surrounding Steve's retirement in Endgame actually meant that it made perfect sense for Sam to take up the mantle. Bucky didn't want to live in his best friend's shadow, but not only that though, the manner of Sam becoming Captain America was very similar to how it happened in the comics.

A few years ago, Steve Rogers suffered an unexpected side-effect from the super soldier serum. It aged him to a ninety-year-old man, and with Bucky having long since abandoned the Captain America identity, Sam was the next in the line to take up the mantle.

Endgame, although for drastically different reasons, also sees an aged Steve Rogers pass on the identity to his longtime partner. Here's hoping that, when Sam suits up, the suit looks just as good as it did in the comics.
