Avengers: Endgame - 25 WTF Moments
12. "Hail HYDRA!"
Not all that long ago, back in 2017, a certain type of Marvel fan was absolutely appalled at the idea of Captain America ever being an undercover HYDRA agent, as was revealed in the comics. Effigies were burned, teeth were gnashed, people lost their minds over it.
And then even after Secret Empire was finished and restored the non-HYDRA Rogers to the page, the Russos decided to take aim at that controversy for an amazing, shocking pay-off to a gag that seemed to be heading towards a remake of the excellent elevator scene in The Winter Soldier. Instead of that fight though, a smirking Cap instead got away with the Tesseract by whispering "Hail Hydra" to the other HYDRA sleeper agents.
It's great in the moment, even if it's shocking and it's even better when you think of how many people might have had flashbacks because of it.
About on a par with that, but with far more of a huge fan-service "pop" to borrow the parlance of wrestling, is the moment when it's revealed that Captain America can now wield Mjolnir. Quite what he's done since Avengers: Age Of Ultron to make himself worthy remains to be seen (perhaps it's his belief in Bucky despite everything?) but it legitimately did inspire a WTF from the cooler end of the spectrum.
