Avengers: Endgame - Everything You Need To Know About Black Knight

5. He Wields The 'Ebony Blade' - And It Almost Appeared In Doctor Strange

Black Knight Ebony Blade
Marvel Comics

The Black Knight, as with most knights (at least the cool ones), wields a pretty spectacular weapon. However, this isn't just any medieval artefact - it's the Ebony Blade.

The blade was wielded by the original, medieval Black Knight (named Sir Percy of Scandia) back during Stan Lee and Joe Maneely's original run on the character, and it has been passed down to each generation of Black Knight ever since. With Whitman being a great descendant of Sir Percy he is the most recent figure to wield the blade, which is also enchanted and, let's face it, looks really, really cool.

Interesting to note, however, is that the weapon very nearly appeared in 2016's Doctor Strange, as a weapon locked within the armoury of Karmar-Taj, where Strange went to train. For one reason or another the blade was pulled from the script, which may actually hint that Marvel do indeed have plans to use both the weapon and the character of Black Knight in the future.

Ultimately, the studio probably just didn't want to have to force a retcon like they did with the Infinity Gauntlet, which was originally housed in Odin's vault until it was revealed to have been a fake by Hela in Thor: Ragnarok.

Content Producer/Presenter

WhatCulture's very own resident movie guy, Ewan has been working in the content creation biz for over 10 years now, having started as a freelance contributor to WhatCulture Gaming all the way back in 2015. After graduating with a First-Class Honours in History from Northumbria University in 2017 (where he won a prize for a totally killer dissertation on the Watergate years), Ewan took on the role of Comics Editor at WhatCulture and quickly developed WhatCulture Comics into one of the biggest superhero-focused channels on YouTube. He followed this with a brief hiatus at Screen Rant in 2021, where he worked across the Gaming and Film sections as a writer and editor, before returning to WhatCulture as a Senior Content Producer / Presenter in 2023. He started his own podcast, We Love Dad Movies, in 2022, and has contributed several written pieces to the Eisner-nominated comics website Shelfdust as well. In his current role, Ewan incorporates his love of cinema, comic books, and history into written pieces and video essays for WhatCulture's Film & TV channel, as well as WhatCulture Gaming and WhatCulture Horror, with a particular focus on nineties-era Dad Movies, old school Westerns, and Golden Age Hollywood Noir. John Carpenter is his fave, and he thinks Batman Beyond should never have been cancelled. If that's your vibe, you'll probably like his stuff.
