Avengers: Endgame - Everything You Need To Know About Black Knight
4. Black Knight Has Been Both A Hero And A Villain
Dane Whitman may be a descendant of the original Black Knight, but he's not the only figure from the Modern Age of comics to go by that name. In fact, in recent times, more Black Knights have been villains than they have been heroes, making his role in the MCU (if he is actually to join it) something of a mystery.
Before Dane wielded the Ebony Blade, a figure known as Nathan Garrett uncovered his ancestor's tomb and wielded it for his own nefarious purposes. He fights Hank Pym in his Giant-Man form, joins the nefarious supervillain group, the Masters of Evil, and even fought against the Avengers.
It wasn't until Garrett lay dying that he decided to repent his ways, which is what led Whitman to take on the identity as a hero, determined to turn the Black Knight from a figure who should be reviled into one who should be revered.
Whitman has remained the only proper Black Knight since, but a villain known as Augustine du Lac did once take possession of the Ebony Blade and used it to conquer Wakanda. However, it's safe to say that Whitman will be the Black Knight we see on the big screen, given how that's where the bulk of the character's material lies.
