In one of the key sub-plots of Infinity War, Bruce Banner suffered what could only be called a crisis of identity combined with performance issues. He was faced with a Hulk identity that no longer wanted to be used by him as he saw fit and packed away. That rebellion manifested itself in Hulk taking away Banner's ability to change at will and the scientist was forced to join the fight on his own (admittedly using the Hulkbuster armour).

Even as his friends and allies fell, Hulk remained hidden.

Now

Mark Ruffalo confirmed ahead of Thor: Ragnarok that Banner's story had been devised as a three-part arc, which would take him into Endgame. Leaked concept art has also confirmed that Hulk will be back, but with a major difference.

By the look of Hulk - who is wearing clothing in the concept art - he will be a more intelligent version of the brute we've come to know and love. This has led to lots of speculation that he's going to be reimagined in the Professor Hulk guise: a composite taking in Banner's intellect and Hulk's strength.

That would suggest that the identity war we've seen played out since Thor: Ragnarok is going to be resolved with a compromise and we'll see Hulk again.
