Avengers: Endgame Trailer 2 Reactions: 8 Ups & 2 Downs

6. Still No Thanos

Thanos Infinity War
Marvel Studios

From the earliest days of Infinity War's marketing, we were told that Thanos was going to be the main character and this was very much going to be HIS journey. As such, he was a major part in the marketing campaign and it was on his broad shoulders that the film's hype rested.

But that time is over and it's been one of Endgame's smartest decisions to keep him out of the footage almost entirely so far, aside from a vague hint at his presence and the ominous shadow of his actions hanging over everything. Even here, with footage of the Decimation happening, Thanos isn't shown as a conscious decision and it's the right one once more.

Not showing him reiterates the fact that the Avengers are listless, they have an invisible enemy because they have no idea how they're supposed to undo what he did. Including him would offer too much of a target and this way we get to focus on the story through the filter of the survivors' perspectives. That's a far more interesting position than seeing Thanos smuggly enjoying retirement - or worse, back in the fight. That can be left for the film itself.
