Avengers: Endgame - What Does The Ending Really Mean?

2. Does The Avengers Still Exist?

Steve Rogers is back in the past, and an old man in the present. Tony Stark is dead. So too is Black Widow, in a death that, because of the rules of the Soul Stone, cannot be undone (although she'll be back in a prequel solo film). Hawkeye gets a happyish ending with his family, Thor goes off with the Guardians, and Hulk has nicely found a balance between his two sides (and is injured).

In other words, the Avengers are no more. The original team is gone, and it can't be pieced back together. However, the ending of the movie brings together a LOT of heroes. So many, in fact, that Marvel could pick and choose to create whatever roster they need for another Avengers movie. But also so many that you can ask whether there even NEEDS to be an Avengers team anymore?

There's Black Panther in Wakanda. There's Doctor Strange and Spider-Man in New York. Captain Marvel and the Asgardians in space. Wherever you turn, there's a hero, who can call upon one another if and when needed, but it's too many to really feel like a 'team'. It's like it has now outgrown that idea. Everyone's an Avenger, so no one is an Avenger.
