Avengers: Infinity War - 10 Best Moments

6. Thanos Kills Gamora

Arguably the most haunting and well-executed scene in the entire film sees Thanos and Gamora heading to the planet Vormir, where the Soul Stone is hidden. Considering most fans suspected the stone was most likely in Wakanda, it was a hugely pleasant surprise for the actuality to be something nobody could've seen coming.

When the pair arrive on the mountainous planet, they're greeted by a shadowy figure serving as the keeper of the Soul Stone, revealed to be none other than Red Skull. Though it's a shame Hugo Weaving didn't opt to return for a voice cameo (being replaced by Ross Marquand), it was still a shocking fan-service moment to see the iconic villain briefly return.

He informs Thanos that acquiring the Soul Stone requires the sacrifice of a loved one, which while at first a source of comfort to Gamora (who believes that Thanos doesn't love her), quickly turns to horror when she realises that, in fact, the Mad Titan really does.

After shedding tears for what he has to do, Thanos grabs Gamora and hurls her off the cliff edge to her bloody demise, winning him the Soul Stone. It's a brilliant sequence that's not only terrifying but also does a fantastic job developing Thanos as a complex, multi-faceted character.

He truly believes he's doing the right thing and is anguished at the idea of killing his adopted daughter, but decides to do it for the "greater good" anyway.

While it's highly likely Gamora will be saved by time travel shenanigans in Avengers 4 - especially considering James Gunn has said she'll have a more significant role in Guardians Vol. 3 - this was a nearly note-perfect scene in terms of writing, direction and acting. Just stunning.
