After revealing to Star-Lord that he saved him from Ego (and a probably very painful death as a half-human battery) - and proving he was his real daddy - Yondu sacrificed himself to save his adoptive son and was given a proper Ravager funeral.

Dead.

Why He Needs To Come Back

If Thanos is looking for an easy way to affect Star-Lord - who could be one of his most legitimate threats, given the fact that his very specific physiology seemingly allows him to resist the powers of Infinity Stones (to some extent) - he'll bring back Yondu.

That would be a hell of way to distract Star-Lord, as well as proving that Thanos has literally no respect for emotions.
