Apparently Thanos won't be a one man army when he comes to collect the Infinity Stones from the Avengers and their hastily assembled friends.. He will be joined by Corvus, his "vicious right-hand man", Nox, Ican, Proxima and Ebony all of whom are loyal followers of Thanos and all of whom will require prosthetics and mo-cap work.

Those characters are better known as the Black Order - the high command of Thanos' army (which is likely where the Chitauri come in) - and while Nox and Ican are new names for old characters (Black Dwarf and Supergiant respectively), the others are straight out of the comics. Corvus Glaive leads Thanos' army, Ebony Maw is his super-clever strategist and Proxima Midnight is one of the Order's chief warriors.

They haven't been seen yet, but the idea of the Black Order debuting alongside Thanos makes a lot of sense. He needs harbingers of doom as much as he needs an army of grunts, because he is powerful, but he's not entirely infallible until he gets his hands on all of the Stones.

And in purely logistical terms, the Avengers and the Guardians need other characters to fight with when it comes to the action scenes. It'd look daft them all waiting around to take shots at Thanos.
