Avengers: Infinity War - 23 New Secrets Revealed

4. It WAS The Soul World

Much speculation has been offered about what the scene immediately after Thanos clicks his fingers means. When he's transported to a strange ethereal version of Gamora's home planet where the younger Gamora asks him what his click cost him, the meaning was always a little vague.

But after they hinted that this is the Soul World within the Soul Stone previously, the commentary team here confirm that Thanos was transported to or hallucinated / visualised the Soul World after he snapped his fingers.

3. The Victims Were Chosen For Maximum Impact

Nobody was really assuming that the victims of the snap were chosen randomly. Indeed, it's looked for the most part like the Russos chose to keep the original team alive for Avengers 4 to give them a fitting end as they all bow out of their MCU contracts.

But according to the commentary, the reason was actually more to do with drama. The victims were chosen because of what their deaths meant to the survivors:

"In terms of our choices about who Thanos would end up eradicating with his snap, it was very story focused. How do we pay off each individual character's storyline most profoundly? The first person to go is Bucky Barnes, and it's shot from Captain America's perspective. You know, we're watching Cap go through the experience of watching [Bucky] go away. We're watching Okoye, whose number one mission it is in life is to protect the king. She watches the king go in front of her. And to see those characters react in those situations is very powerful and resonant."

The same obviously goes for Rocket watching Groot die and Tony Stark watching Peter Parker - his surrogate son - go too.
