Avengers: Infinity War - 9 Reasons It's The Most Important Marvel Movie Yet
7. Thanos' Characterisation Is Phenomenal
The MCU hasn't had a 'villain problem' for years now, with both The Vulture and Erik Killmonger ranking among the franchise's most nuanced characters, but Thanos is just something else entirely.
He's the ultimate villain, blinded by dogma and on the cusp of attaining omnipotence. That makes him extremely dangerous, to say the least, and Josh Brolin's performance carries the necessary temperament to make it as convincing as it needs to be.
Buried within that is a genuine conviction that propels his actions. He genuinely thinks he's going the right thing, as is made apparent in that twisted, heartbreaking soul stone sequence where the Mad Titan murders his own daughter.
It might be a stretch to call him sympathetic, because he's nothing more than an intergalactic war criminal, but Thanos' beliefs do set him apart from those other Marvel villains. He's blatantly wrong, but he can't see it at all. It's a uniquely fascinating take on the character, and in divesting from the classic Infinity Gauntlet tale of his obsession with Lady Death, it's also the most compelling.
