Avengers: Infinity War is the culmination of a decade's worth of stories, and a lot of what it does has only been made possible by what's come before. This film cannot exist without those nineteen earlier works, but in arriving at this point, the franchise has more than illustrated its immense appeal.

Everything has been building to this one moment, and while the film might not hail the changing of the guard fans were perhaps expecting, it does accomplish what was once believed impossible. Infinity War is predicated entirely on those earlier Marvel films, and while forcing audiences to invest in nineteen or so features before going to see one film would've seemed like a nigh-intolerable ask ten or so years ago, the latest Avengers movie is set to break pretty much every record going, retaining a momentum no other franchise out there can currently match.

But, more importantly, Infinity War also unlocks the MCU's full narrative potential. All the post-credits sequences, all the teases, all the foreshadowing - most, if not all, contribute to the overarching story of the Russo bros' first Avengers movie, and for longtime admirers of the MCU, it makes the film a uniquely gratifying watch.
