14. Proxima Midnight

The only female member of the Black Order is the best of the warrior types, offering a more traditional take on a villain - all vim and vinegar - and firing off spiteful shots rather than being as creepy and evangelical as Ebony Maw.

Crucially, she's also perfectly unlikeable, which means that when she eventually gets what's coming to her it genuinely feels like something to be happy about. And that's the key to the bleak finale really landing its emotional punch - setting up positives just before it.

13. Black Widow

Following on from her impressive Civil War involvement, Black Widow is a big deal in Infinity War and the idea that she's just an unpowered human is vanquished completely when you see her holding her own first against the Black Order and then in Wakanda against the Outriders.

Widow and Captain America are actually fairy understated, but the way they turn up to save the day in Edinburgh is really great and there's enough space for there to be some residual tension between her and Banner without it needing to be explored too distractingly here.
