2. Star-Lord

The MCU has had a rich vein of characters making terrible decisions based on their passion and volatility with Tony Stark usually sitting at the top of that ladder, but it's Peter Quill who gets that treatment in Infinity War.

After we've watched him and Gamora's relationship blossom, it was assumed that we'd see them get together properly in Guardians Vol 3 but the Russos pulled an almighty swerve by killing Gamora off and then having Quill's emotions ruin the one chance to stop Thanos from winning.

It all fits his arc too - as he jokingly mentions in conversation with Thor (with whom he shares an incredible dynamic) he's gone through a lot and Gamora dying so close to the loss of his real father, his biological father and the revelation of his mother's murder was always going to destabilise him. Watching him tell Gamora he loves her before trying to kill her and then the realisation that Thanos has killed her later proves the value of casting Pratt.
