14. The Skrulls Have It

According to one Reddit theory, the Kree Skrull War could play a big part in Thanos' motivations (suggesting we could see Captain Marvel's stand-alone actually acting as a sort of Infinity War interquel) because the Soul Stone is (or was) in the possession of the Soul Stone.

That theory suggests that the Soul Stones powers of manipulation could be used to explain the Skrulls' ability to shape-shift, fitting in with the way the other Stones' powers have been organically brought into the MCU. It would aoso explain why we're jumping to the past for Captain Marvel.

It would be way too much of a disservice to have the Soul Stone explain the Skrulls' powers: that should just be part of their physiology.

And saying the Soul Stone can shape-shift its user is a slight misreading: sure, it can change beings back to their true form (which could come in handy when uncovering) but that's not really the same as what the Skrull can do. So it's probably a bit of an over-stretch.
