The man causing him this agony is Ebony Maw, one of Thanos' Black Order and someone who is noted for his genius-level intellect, meaning he's the perfect choice to go up against fellow intellectual Strange, in a battle of both the mind and powers as Maw attempts to claim the Time Stone for his master.
