Snapped out of existence by Thanos, while apologising to Tony Stark.

WHY He Died

Doctor Strange is another of the new characters who was seemingly moved on in order to clear the path for the original Avengers, but he's also a hugely powerful character whose defeat is as symbolic as the defeat of Scarlet Witch.

He's very much tied to the Time Stone and him being killed was an expression of Thanos' power as much as it was good for the story.

There's also the idea - which is quite horrifying when you think about it - that Doctor Strange actually foresaw his own death and realised it was the only way to defeat Thanos. It very much fits alongside the point about sacrifice in the MCU.
