Baby Driver Review: 5 Ups & 4 Downs

4. Extremely Clever Use Of Music

Wright has described the film as a musical, and he's not wrong. Baby Driver's central gimmick is that protagonist Baby listens to music in order to drown out a tinnitus-like condition he received in a car accident as a child, and so Wright decides to set the entire movie to whatever music Baby is listening to.

As such, much of what's going on throughout the film is directly synced to the soundtrack, from the sound of police sirens to gunfire, essentially making the film feel like a cross between The Fast and the Furious and La La Land.

One can certainly argue that Wright employs music a little self-indulgently after the initial fun of the gimmick has worn off, but it's nothing if not a unique approach to the material, and results in a sizzling synergy of sound and visuals.

And yes, there's a Queen song in there, because of course, there has to be.
