Bad Times At The El Royale: Ranking Every Major Performance Worst To Best

2. Chris Hemsworth As Billy Lee

Hemsworth may not properly enter the film until the third act, but hot damn does he make it count.

In playing Billy Lee, (a fictionalized version of Charles Manson) Hemsworth gets to exhibit an entirely different side of himself than most audiences are used to and he uses this to his advantage. Whereas roles like Thor allow him to use his inordinate amount of charming charisma in the name of good, here, he uses it for much more sinister purposes.

In the flashback that shows Billy Lee speaking to his followers, it becomes obvious why he's such a coveted leader. He's insanely charismatic and passionate, even as he forces his followers to nearly kill one another.

In his scenes at the El Royale, Hemsworth brings a fiery intensity that we haven't really seen from him before and it is breathtaking. He dominates these scenes because of the strength of his performance, and it is entirely because of great he is that the stakes feel so high in this final sequence.

Perhaps Hemsworth's most powerful moment in the entire film is when Darlene belittles Billy Lee, telling him that she can see right through his every word. In just a few seconds of screentime, Hemsworth is able to express Billy Lee's surprise and discomfort at Darlene's sudden honesty. For the first time, he isn't in control of the scene and Hemsworth is able to play this shifting dynamic up beautifully.
