Bad Times At The El Royale: Ranking Every Major Performance Worst To Best
3. Dakota Johnson As Emily Summerspring
If you know Dakota Johnson only as 'that girl from Fifty Shades', I implore you to reconsider your evaluation of her. Between this and her upcoming role in Luca Guadagnino's Suspiria, she's about to become one of the most sought-after young actresses in all of Hollywood.
As Emily Summerspring, Johnson brings a restrained power to the role. When she arrives at the El Royale, she is on the run from Billy Lee, with her sister Ruth in the trunk of her car. In her introduction, Johnson is a complete and total bad*ss with attitude to spare.
But where she really shines is in the later scenes that she gets to share with Ruth. Johnson never gives in to the easy route of being overtly emotional towards her sister. Instead, she plays each emotion in a reserved fashion, letting the characters true feelings come through more in the subtext of her performance, mostly through movement.
Even later, when she and Billy Lee come face to face, she exhibits this same kind of restraint and bad*ssery. All around, Johnson more than earns her place on this roster of exceptional actors and proves why she is so much more capable than those Fifty Shades films ever indicated.
