BAFTAs 2017: Predicting Every Winner

The road to the Oscars.

La La Land BAFTA
Summit Entertainment & BAFTA

Just two weeks before the Oscars, the BAFTAs unveils the British film industry's picks for the year's best achievements in cinema. The nominations are out, some of them head-scratchers and others sure-things, but now all that's left is to try and guess who will walk away with those slightly creepy gold masks on the February 12th ceremony, just two weeks ahead of the Academy Awards.

We've predicted all 22 of the major categories (not the two short film ones, because nobody can even see the damn things yet), mixing knowledge of past ceremonies with a little of our own intuition and considering the current state of the awards race.

Those who've followed the awards circus for years probably won't be expecting much in the way of surprises, but one of the many joys of shows like this is when a shock victory comes out of nowhere and totally shakes things up. Fingers crossed for that.

Here are our predictions for the 2017 BAFTAs...

22. Best Actor

La La Land BAFTA
Roadside Attractions

Prediction: Casey Affleck (Manchester by the Sea)

Affleck seems to have weathered his personal controversies pretty well on the awards circuit so far, most notably winning honours from the Golden Globes and National Board of Review.

The only actor in the group with a remote chance of upsetting him is Ryan Gosling (La La Land), but there's very little likelihood of BAFTA veering away from the popular opinion here.

Should He Win?: Absolutely. He gave the year's best performance by a male actor and nothing in the group really comes close to the restrained devastation of his work. It's his year and he's taking the gold home.
